There are 3 main types – one specifically for sheet metal which has specific requirements about hole or cutouts that shouldn’t be too close to bends or edges, there are also proximity sensors that can be used in assemblies and custom sensors, that cover such things as distance, mass or basic costs.

Video: Importing a sheet metal file into Solid Edge  

When you import a sheet metal file created in another CAD system, you should be able to convert the file to a sheet metal file. There are times when this process will fail and it is usually down to files not being a uniform thickness. The typical causes of this are most likely:

1. Inconsistent internal/external bend combinations
2. Holes that cross bends
3. Chamfers on edges 
4. Angled faces that intersect a bend.

Femap Webinar: Introduction to non-linear buckling

 

Femap with NX Nastran provides eigenvalue (Euler) buckling as a simple method to understand collapse modes that can occur well below otherwise acceptable design stresses. Non-linear buckling takes this a step further by properly including 2nd order displacement/stiffness effects and/or follower forces. Arc length methods are also available to investigate post-buckling behaviour, or any general condition where a load dropoff may occur during progression of load. This webinar covers the key steps required to run non-linear buckling. Sub-modelling provides a convenient way to investigate local details or design changes without having to analyse the full complex assembly in which the design detail resides. Reasons for doing it might be:

• Your computing power might not simultaneously cope with the large scale combined with very local details in a complex assembly.

• You may want to investigate numerous local design options that are influenced by global loads/behaviour, without re-running the entire model for each design change.

• A big structure/assembly that is mostly linear may have local details that yield (or contact), where it is worthwhile to investigate the non-linear effects without running the entire model each time.
